Department of Imaging

The Department of imaging is one of our busiest patient facilities equipped with modern diagnostic facilities and caters to the needs of both inpatients and outpatients, as well as to referrals from outside the hospital.

A team of qualified and committed radiologists backed by trained radiographers provides diagnostic services for over 95,000 patients annually.

ROUTINE X-RAYS : The department is equipped with 800 mA X-ray units, with films being processed in our computerized radiography system, ensuring excellent image quality.

SPECIAL RADIOLOGICAL PROCEDURES : These are performed using modern X-ray machines equipped with image intensifiers. All possible precautions are taken to restrict radiation to the patient and operator.

ULTRASOUND : The department is equipped with 4 state-of-the-art machines.
Studies performed include :
- Abdominal / Pelvic scans, Obstetric scans with 3D & 4D images, Infertility studies.
- Doppler studies
- Small parts including breast.
- Paediatric sonograms including neonatal heads.
- Ultrasound guided interventional procedures, FNACs and biopsies.
- Portable sonograms for sick patients.

CT : A wide range of investigations are performed using our 16 slice multidetector CT unit.
These include non enhanced and contrast enhanced scans of the head, neck, thorax and abdomen in both adults and children. High resolution and rapid imaging of body parts is possible with detailed multiplanar reconstruction. Special investigations include CT angiographies and CT guided FNA and biopsies.

MRI : An advanced 1.5T MR unit occupies pride of place in the department. Equipped with the latest software it allows imaging of various body parts and organ systems with great precision and clarity.

MAMMOGRAPHY : Screening and diagnostic mammographies are performed in the department and supplemented by sonographic evaluation of the breast where considered necessary.

DEXA SCANS : Bone densitometry is a useful tool in the evaluation of osteoporosis and
is available in the department. Protocols include those for spine, hip, wrist and whole body.

Out patients are appointed for imaging studies while we attempt our level best to accommodate patients at the given time, we may be constrained by pending urgent scans from casualty and our wards. Kindly bear with us if you are required to wait longer than expected for your turn.

Patients due for ultrasound examinations of the abdomen / pelvis may be required to wait for optimal bladder filling.

CT scans examinations of the abdomen require oral administration of water or contrast medium. This will necessarily extend the duration of your stay in the department. Special investigations like intravenous urograms and follow-through studies may require several hours for completion.

General preparation : Objects that are dense enough to be imaged on film ( like jewellery, belts, buttons and zippers ) are to be removed prior to x-ray, CT & MR the examinations. The department provides appropriate clothing to be worn during x-rays, ultrasounds, mammograms, MR and CT procedures.

Prior preparation with laxatives is required for investigations like barium studies and intravenous urography. Patients will be advised accordingly when their appointments are being booked.

Patients are requested to kindly follow all instructions issued by our radiographers to ensure optimal image quality and prevent repeat examinations.

Patient Safety

We are committed to providing reliable diagnostic facilities with responsible use of X-rays and due attention to radiation exposure to both patient and operator. A minimal amount of radiation is used to obtained needed results.

The 10 day rule is adhered to in women of reproductive age group to prevent exposing early pregnancies to unwarranted radiation. You may be advised to consult your referring doctor in the event of any doubt. If the possibility of pregnancy cannot be excluded, female patients would be asked if the menstrual period is overdue. In such a case, i.e. outside the past 28 days, the examination may be postponed.

Solely non ionic contrast is used for intravascular injection in the department. You will required to fill in and sign a consent form before you are administered contrast medium. You can however rest assured that the contrast medium used is safe and any adverse reaction, however minor, is dealt with promptly and efficiently.

Emphasis is placed on the prevention of contrast induced kidney damage. Intravenous contrast will not be administered in the absence of a recent serum creatinine value.

Absolute contraindications for MR include cardiac pacemakers, AV aneurysm clips and conchlear implants. Other metallic implants may be permissible if titanium based.
